Earning potential of SAP functional consultant

Q. How much can an SAP HR functional consultant with seven years of experience--six years of specific SAP experience--and who holds an MBA in HR, expect in terms of compensation?

In the Singapore market, the SAP HR functional consultant can expect between S$5,000 (US$3,419) and S$6,500 (US$4,445) a month, excluding fixed or variable bonuses. Compensation also depends on several factors such as:


Regional vs. local roles
Banking and consulting vs. end user and non-banking environment
Implementation vs. support role
Contract vs. permanent role
Consultants at the left hand of the scale (i.e. regional role, banking and consulting environment, implementation, contract role) are likely to command the upper end of the salary range.

What is SAP?

SAP AG (ISIN: DE0007164600, FWB: SAP, NYSE: SAP) is the largest European software enterprise and the third largest in the world, with headquarters in Walldorf, Germany.

History

SAP was founded in 1972 as Systemanalyse und Programmentwicklung by five former IBM engineers in Mannheim, Baden-Württemberg (Dietmar Hopp, Hans-Werner Hector, Hasso Plattner, Klaus Tschira, and Claus Wellenreuther).[1] The acronym was later changed to stand for Systeme, Anwendungen und Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung ("Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing").

In 1976 "SAP GmbH" was founded and the following year it moved headquarters to Walldorf. SAP AG became the company's official name after the 2005 annual general meeting (AG is short for Aktiengesellschaft).

In August 1988, SAP GmbH transferred into SAP AG (a corporation by German law), and public trading started November 4. Shares are listed on the Frankfurt and Stuttgart stock exchange.[1]

The founding members Dietmar Hopp, Hasso Plattner, Klaus E. Tschira and Hans-Werner Hector form the executive board. In 1995, SAP is included in the German stock index DAX. On September 22, 2003, SAP is included in the Dow Jones STOXX 50.[2] In 1991, Prof. Dr. Henning Kagermann joins the board; Dr. Peter Zencke becomes a board member in 1993.[3] Claus Heinrich,[4] and Gerhard Oswald [5] have been members of the SAP Executive Board since 1996. Two years later, in 1998 the first change at the helm takes place. Dietmar Hopp and Klaus Tschira move to the supervisory board, Dietmar Hopp is appointed Chairman of the supervisory board. Henning Kagermann is appointed as Co-Chairman and CEO of SAP next to Hasso Plattner. Werner Brandt joined SAP in 2001 as member of the SAP Executive Board and Chief Financial Officer since 2001.[6] Léo Apotheker has been a member of the SAP Executive Board and president of Global Customer Solutions & Operations since 2002 and is appointed Deputy CEO in 2007.

Henning Kagermann became the sole CEO of SAP in 2003.[7] In February 2007 his contract was extended until 2009. After continuous disputes over the responsibility of the development organization, Shai Agassi, a member of the executive board who had been named as a potential successor to Kagermann, left the organization

Is a short course on SAP good enough?

Q. I understand there is an SAP course that only takes one month, if it is full-time, to complete. Can I actually switch to become an SAP consultant with just that one month of training?

Will I need to have any IT background? Also, I've never handled SAP, would that be an issue? I also read somewhere that consulting firms will normally hire an SAP consultant if they have done at least two implementations. Is that true? What is the demand for fresh graduates? Last but not least, I understand that Genova is providing training for this course and the fees are quite costly. Is there any other institute providing this course?

The one-month course typically provides the candidate with an overview of SAP. Candidates with some business related background like business or accountancy should be able to benefit from this course. However, it may not provide enough hands-on experience that an SAP consultant requires for the job. SAP consultants, both fresh and experienced candidates, are in demand now. Candidates who have prior experience tend to have better job offers compared with fresh graduates. However, fresh graduates who work hard can achieve much job satisfaction and have a good career after a few years. SAP courses are costly. However, fresh graduates can learn on the job. In addition, some organizations do conduct in-house training for their staff, besides having external courses.

Worth leaving accounting for a career in SAP?

Q. I have been an external auditor for the past five years, and I earn approximately S$55,000 (US$38,049) per annum now. I am considering pursuing SAP FI certification. However, I am very worried that there will be a huge paycut, the fact that my prior experience will not be accounted for, and I will be considered as a freshie in this industry.

I have several salary sources which are inconsistent, some saying that there will not be a pay cut, instead a pay rise. Some mentioned that salary will be approximately half of what I am earning now. My questions are: Will my prior experience be accounted for and how much can I expect as a fresh SAP-certified professional with my current experience? If I get a paycut, how long will I have to wait before I can start to get back my current salary? How long normally does one implementation take? How is the demand for fresh SAP consultants in the market now?

While certifications establish a form of baseline in determining relevant "trained" skills, having relevant consulting experience such as the ability to manage and provide value-add advice to customer is also crucial.

The salary offered will depend on the relevant experience that the candidate has for the specific SAP job which he or she has applied for. A typical implementation may take eight months to one year. However, some may take longer, depending on the size, coverage and complexity of the client's business. SAP consultants, both fresh and experienced candidates, are in demand now.
